Old Pueblo Playwrights, OPP, is a writers’ group that is geared for both beginners and experienced playwrights. The goal of Old Pueblo Playwrights is to help dramatists learn and succeed at their craft. We hold a New Play Festival every year to showcase the plays our members have been working on, sometimes through many rewrites and we occasionally hold other public performances as well. These staged readings are a valuable learning experience for everyone.
The OPP New Play Festival for 2026 will take place March 3-8 at the Cabaret space at the Temple of Music and Art in Tucson, AZ!
We will take New Plays to the stage for the first time!
Some concise considerations regarding the configuration of plays
By no means an exhaustive list, but here are some excellent suggestions.
My fourth play, Gathering the Flock, was presented as a choral reading in Portland, Oregon, at the 21Ten Theatre on April 21st. It was a full house and the talk-back was very positive. Kevin-Michael Moore, who played the main character, Pastor Steve, said that he performs regularly and some pieces don’t affect him. Moore said that this play stayed with him and kept him thinking.
Without OPP, I would never have written this play. Their guidance, feedback and support made all the difference. Thanks to OPP I have become a published playwright and have had a play in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Mark McLemore, host and producer of AZPM's "Arizona Spotlight" (NPR 89.1), interviewed OPP members and playwrights John Vornholt and Liisa Rose this month in the AZPM radio studio, just in time for our 36th Annual New Play Festival. John is the longtime president of OPP and is coordinating this year's Festival. Liisa is co-chairing the Festival with Scott Berg.
